SENNENTUNTSCHI: CURSE OF THE ALPS

Posted by Jean Jessup on Friday, September 30, 2011, In : Dramatic

Review on the Run: This epic Swiss horror/mystery told the legend of a female spirit who was supernaturally summoned into a doll made out of a broom and rags, which manifested into a flesh and blood young woman.  The brutish men who cast this spell assumed that she was their sex slave, ignoring that she had her own will like a regular human being.  Problems proliferated as the men tried to control her.  The church also passed judgement against her.  From a spiritual perspective, I found it to...

DICK NIGHT

Posted by Jean Jessup on Friday, September 30, 2011,

Review on the Run: Dick Night was the best Tucson-made film I have ever seen!  This wild, yet tasteful, sex comedy was so professionally made and well-written that I forgot I was watching a local film.  The story is about Rachel, well played by Jennifer June Ross, who is considering having an affair to rebound from being left at the altar and living alone in her wedding home which is filled with wedding gifts to be returned.  The wedding home is out in the middle of nowhere in the desert.  Sk...

YAKUZA WEAPON

Posted by Jean Jessup on Wednesday, September 21, 2011,

Review on the Run: I wimped out on Yakuza Weapon (Gokudo Heiki), a tongue-and-cheek gore-fest film for an adult male's inner bad boy.  I left during the last 1/4th of the film; I was tired and not up for the massive amounts of intense maiming and killing.  I now realized what the genre label "ultraviolent" means.  All the men I interviewed absolutely loved this film.  The movie was populated by one-dimensional bad-ass characters who waved their machismo around like huge flame-throwers while p...

KARATE ROBO ZABORGAR

Posted by Jean Jessup on Tuesday, September 20, 2011,

Review on the Run: Noboru Iguchi's Karate Robo Zaborgar is a delightful, hilarious, dizzying send-up of 70's Asian superhero movies.  Great 70's action soundtrack along with extreme caricatures, a wildly creative plot interjected with current social issues, including women's issues and really funny dialogue, make this a wonderfully entertaining film.

MARIANNE

Posted by Jean Jessup on Monday, September 19, 2011, In : Dramatic

Review on the Run: Marianne is a Swedish ghost story about a man who is suffering from the guilt of failed relationships and the death of his wife.  He is also suffering from sleep paralysis and experiencing nightly supernatural visitations from a female being.  His therapist takes the mainstream view that his nighttime experience is a hallucination.  His daughter's slightly eccentric boyfriend, believes it might be a Mare, a Succubus-type creature from Swedish mythology.  A very-well acted e...

WE ARE ALL CYLONS

Posted by Jean Jessup on Monday, September 19, 2011, In : Documentary

Review on the Run: We are all Cylons is an insightful documentary about the fans of Battlestar Galactica and an exploration into why the series is so deeply important to viewers.  I have never seen this series, but am now very inspired to see what all the fuss is about.  One of the main themes of Battlestar Galactica is the combining of artificial intelligence (AI) with humanness.  Scientific thinkers in the medical field and technology are also interviewed and discuss our attraction and obse...

9/11/11 - A look at the features (Cont.)

The 2011 AZ Underground Film Festival is stepping up to the plate as a prestigious film festival showing comparable films to
the Toronto Film Festival & the Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal, which I used to attend regularly before I came to Arizona seven years ago. This year's festival is satisfying my longing for the Midnight Madness Programme at the Toronto Film Festival and the Fantasia Film Festival

Asian Extreme:

KARATE ROBO ZABORGAR promise...
